Snetterton Heatwave awaits as Audi Cup continues Impressive Debut Campaign
The next stop in Maximum Motorsport’s inaugural Audi Cup series takes place at Snetterton this weekend (11-12 July).
After highly entertaining visits to Thruxton and Pembrey, the field of identical two-litre Audi TTs will take on the three-mile former airfield venue in Norfolk, which is set to provide more close-quarters racing in front of a very large crowd.
The fledgling series continues to grow in its first season as it follows the well-proven path of the sister Civic Cup, widely acknowledged as a standard setter for well-regulated one-make racing in British motorsport. As part of a professionally promoted package, featuring performances in front of packed spectator banks and a high-quality livestream beamed around the world, the Audi Cup offers superb value with huge potential.
After Scotsman Ross Makar scored a hat-trick in largely wet conditions at Thruxton, it was a different story last time out in sunny Wales. Regular frontrunner Andrew Rogerson scorched to success in impressive fashion before a delighted Sam Meagher earned a maiden victory in the rematch.
With Makar yet to confirm his entry for the trip to East Anglia, Rogerson’s self-run First Choice Maintenance with AS Metal Recycling & Skip Hire car could start as favourite for this weekend’s action.
But he’ll certainly be kept on his toes by Meagher, whose D&M Plant Hire backed car runs from Ally Makar’s 4G Racing stable. The Oxfordshire driver arrives at Snetterton full of confidence and bidding to add more wins to his tally.
Fellow former MG man Patrick Booth is another in the 4G Racing camp. The Windsor racer is targeting his first podium finish of what has so far been an up-and-down campaign.
Returning to the field after missing Pembrey is short oval racer Ruby Smith. This time she will be joined by father Sean, who was a strong contender when he was last behind the wheel a couple of years ago. The ultra-experienced racer enjoyed plenty of success up the road at Great Yarmouth in his Superstox days. While the wide-open expanses of Snetterton are a little different, Smith will look to feed off the same Norfolk vibe.
Making their series debuts this weekend are Carl Swift and John Wyatt. Experienced campaigner Swift knows exactly how to win in an Audi TT and should be immediately on the pace at the sharp end of the field.
Backed by his own John Wyatt Jewellery concern, Wyatt has plenty of experience of Volkswagen Audi Group machinery, having regularly campaigned a Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk5. So he should quickly find himself at home in an Audi TT where he will enjoy the level playing field of a closely regulated one-make championship.
On-track action this weekend begins with Qualifying on Saturday (11 July) morning at 10:55 hrs. Both races then take place the following day, Sunday (12 July). Lights-out on the opener is scheduled for 09:05hrs before the drivers get the chance of a rematch that afternoon at 15:25hrs.
A fantastic weekend of racing also features touring car action from TCR UK and more tin-tops in the form of the ultra-competitive Civic Cup. There’s also the big rigs from the British Truck Racing Championship to enjoy. So why not get yourself down to Snetterton to soak up the atmosphere?
Alternatively, sit back and enjoy the livestream from the comfort of your sofa: all the racing action will be livestreamed, together with expert commentary, analysis and interviews, on the BARC’s YouTube channel.
