Audi Cup Heads West for Historic Pembrey Debut

Audi Cup Heads West for Historic Pembrey Debut

After providing plenty of entertainment in its inaugural race meeting last month, Audi Cup returns to action this weekend (20-21 June) with a pair of races at Pembrey in south Wales.

A trio of entertaining contests at Thruxton came as no surprise to those already familiar with its Maximum Motorsport-promoted sister series, the Civic Cup, which is widely acknowledged as one of the country’s most competitive one-make championships.

Audi Cup, for two-litre Audi TT Cup cars, follows the same one-make ethos with tightly controlled regulations providing for close racing on a level playing field – all played out on a professional package in front of big crowds and with a high-quality livestream beamed all around the world. When it comes to bang for your buck, you’ll struggle to find anything better than Audi Cup.

On the back of a stylish hat-trick at Thruxton, Scotsman Ross Makar heads the entry in his 4G Motorsport-run car. While Makar would fancy his chances whatever the weather, wet conditions appeared to play into his hands somewhat last time out. Will he be able to continue his winning run under Welsh summer skies?

Leading the opposition is Berkshire-based Andrew Rogerson. The Thruxton polesitter thrilled the crowd as he pulled some incredible shapes through the Hampshire circuit’s fast, sweeping bends. He’ll certainly be worth watching this weekend as he bids to get the better of Makar.

Sam Meagher came closest to threatening Makar and Rogerson’s supremacy at the season-opener, with a pair of podium finishes. Running from the same 4G stable as Makar, the Oxfordshire man will be aiming to make at least one step higher up the podium. Patrick Booth completes the 4G squad having raced with the team for many years; two fourth places are his best results so far this year.

The only other driver to stand on the podium last time out was Iain Dowler. The former MG Cup class champion was delighted with his effort and is sure to be in the hunt for more this weekend.

Gremlins appeared to impact the competitiveness of James Blake (i-tech Racing) at the opening weekend but the Salford man will aim to bounce back this weekend.

While most Audi Cup drivers will be lacking recent experience of Pembrey, Folley Motorsport’s Harrison Folley will be in more familiar surroundings. But how much his rallycross experience at the circuit will help when it comes to the asphalt-only action this weekend remains to be seen!

It’s an early start for the Audi Cup drivers as on-track action begins with a 15-minute qualifying session on Saturday (20 June) morning at 0925hrs. The first race of the weekend follows the lunch break, with lights-out schedules for 1340hrs. The sequel takes place on Sunday (21 June) morning at 1135hrs.

With the big rigs from the British Truck Racing Championship, plus the ultra-competitive Civic Cup also on the bill, and plenty of off-track festivities, why not head to South Wales this weekend to witness the action in person?

But if you can’t be there in person, fear not: all the racing action will be livestreamed, together with expert commentary, analysis and interviews, on the BARC’s YouTube channel.
