Thruxton ready to Unleash the first chapter of the Audi Cup
A new era gets underway at Thruxton this weekend (16-17 May) as the first-ever races of Maximum Motorsport’s exciting new Audi Cup series take place on the super-fast Hampshire circuit.
The brand new series for two-litre Audi TT Cup cars follows the same path as its sister series, Civic Cup, widely acknowledged as one of the country’s most competitive one-make championships.
Strict control over regulations ensures costs are kept in check and close racing is guaranteed among drivers racing equal equipment. Competing on the same bill as the British Truck Racing Championship also ensures that the action takes place in front of huge crowds as well as being livestreamed for free all around the world.
Heading the entry for this weekend’s inaugural triple-header of races are a number of drivers with previous experience of racing two-litre Audi TTs.
Berkshire-based Andrew Rogerson can count on local support and starts as one of the pre-season favourites for honours. Rogerson has plenty of race wins under his belt and is a former MG Owners’ Club champion, so he knows how to be successful in one-make machinery.
Super-quick Scotsman Ross Makar leads the line for his father Ali’s 4G Racing squad and is a former MG Trophy champion as well as having experience of racing TTs at the sharp end. Expect team-mate Sam Meagher to be in the hunt for victory too, while Patrick Booth will also be right at home in both his Audi TT and the 4G squad with whom he has raced for many years.
James Blake (i-Tech Racing), Mike Harris (Cape Motors) and Iain Dowler (NRH Motors), a former class champion in the MG Cup, all arrive with experience of racing Audi TTs competitively, which they will look to translate to the new series.
Ruby Smith (Globe Motorsport Limited) makes her return to circuit racing this year, having enjoyed competitive showings in 2024. She is supplementing her Audi Cup campaign with short oval racing, where she is well versed in close-quarters racing.
Smith also has experience in racing in rallycross, which is where Harrison Folley (Folley Motorsport) makes the move from. Something of an unknown quantity on the circuits, the teen star looks set to quickly rise through the ranks having impressed in his previous dual-surface racing.
The competitive action begins on Saturday (16 May) with a 15-minute qualifying session scheduled for just after noon (1205hrs). The lights go out to signify the start of Audi Cup’s first ever race at 1555hrs that same afternoon. Then on Sunday (17 May), there will be two more 15-minute races at 1445hrs and 1650hrs.
With the British Truck Racing Championship and the ultra-competitive Civic Cup also on the bill, why not make the trip to Hampshire to witness history in the making? But if you can’t be there in person, fear not: all the racing action will be livestreamed, together with expert commentary, analysis and interviews, on the BARC’s YouTube channel.
