Audi Cup Heads to Donington for Penultimate Event of Inaugural Season

Maximum Motorsport’s Audi Cup reaches the penultimate event of its inaugural season at Donington Park this weekend (8-9 August).

The famous East Midlands circuit plays host to Rounds 8 & 9 of the non-championship series for identical two-litre Audi TTs ahead of a proposed full-season championship next year.

Sister series to the burgeoning Civic Cup, which is itself a feeder category for TCR UK, Audi Cup benefits from being on the same professionally promoted package racing in front of large crowds at the UK’s finest circuits. A high-quality livestream means that all of the close-quarters action is beamed across the world where it can be watched for free on YouTube.

The seven races to date have had three different winners, with Ross Makar and Andrew Rogerson claiming three apiece, and Sam Meagher having a solo triumph to his name.

Those three once again top the entry list at Donington, with Scotsman Makar back in action after having to miss the previous rounds at Snetterton due to work commitments. Driving for his father Ally’s 4G Racing outfit, Makar is one of the most experienced drivers on the grid and provides a benchmark for others to aspire to.

Oxfordshire man Meagher runs from the same stable, with his entry backed by D&M Plant Hire, and will be looking to add to the success he achieved at Pembrey in Wales earlier in the season.

Team stalwart Patrick Booth completes the 4G entry. With a best finish of second, last time out at Snetterton, will Booth be able to go one better and record his first win?

Rogerson took the honours in both Snetterton races, adding to his Pembrey tally. His self-run, First Choice Maintenance with AS Metal Recycling & Skip Hire-backed car is sure to remain at the sharp end this weekend.

Running as a non-championship series in its first season means that Audi Cup drivers have more freedom to come and go according to other commitments, without having to worry about championship points. Pembrey podium finisher Iain Dowler (NRH Motors) and former rallycross driver Harrison Folley (Folley Motorsport) both return this weekend having had to miss last month’s Snetterton races.

James Blake (i-tech Racing/M4 Tyres) is also back for the first time since the inaugural weekend at Thruxton, while Ruby Smith (Globe Motorsport), who has a varied racing background, also continues her part-time campaign.

As the series continues to grow in its first year, we welcome another new name to the grid this weekend in the form of Mark Jenkins.

On-track action this weekend begins with Qualifying on Saturday (8 August) at 1200hrs. Both races then take place the following day, Sunday (9 August). Lights-out on the opener is scheduled for 1100hrs before the drivers get the reversed-grid contest gets under way at 1500hrs.

As always at Audi Cup race meetings, there is a packed programme of racing that also features touring car action from TCR UK and the ultra-competitive Civic Cup, plus the always popular British Truck Racing Championship.
